In a video posted April 23, influencer Melissa Mae Carlton, who shares her life with over 150,000 Instagram followers, announced that Molly, who died at age 5 in December 2025, was diagnosed with PPA2, a rare mitochondrial condition. The disorder can be inherited from carrier parents and has been linked to sudden cardiac events in otherwise healthy children.
Carlton credited the SUDC Foundation for advocating posthumous testing after Molly's death. She said the family suspects Molly may have had the same condition as Abigail, the couple's 9-year-old who died in April 2024 of sepsis. Melissa and her husband Tom are having other family members tested; they also share daughter Lily and son Harry.
